Malolo Island Resort
After a hellish tour of the Auckland international airport -hellish because of the number of people working at cross-purposes with everyone giving conflicting instructions - we headed off to Fiji.
Our first impression of Nadi was that it was hot!
And that the people were super friendly.
B made friends with three different children as we waited for the ferry that would take us to our resort. Then he got angry: his father and I wanted to sit outside on the deck and bask in the warmth but B wanted to be in the air conditioned room reserved for tourists. In the end, we allowed him to go in there, sans his electronic device.
Approximately 45 minutes later, the ferry stopped and two smaller boats approached. The first boat took our luggage and the second boat took us and a few other people who, it turned out, were people that worked at the Malolo Island Resort and were coming back after their days off. We met the executive chef of the resort that way!
A band welcomed us with a song and we were given shell necklaces before a small tour of the resort.
No internet in the rooms.
No television in the rooms.
A HAMMOCK outside the room.
This week was going to be bliss...

Je m'amuse trop, m'man!

Waitomo Caves
Just before returning to Auckland, we angled our trip a little to make a pit stop at the Waitomo caves.
The first tour we took brought us into the bowels of the Ruakuri cave. We descended a long spiral then entered into the darkness. Lights and doors are activated by the tour guide to minimize exposure for the glowworms that call the caves home. B was delighted when our tour guide trusted him with the remote control for the doors!
We saw huge caverns but failed to catch people rafting down the underground river. I would have loved to try that "ride" but B, at 8 years of age, was 4 years to young...
We saw glowworms from far. We saw glowworms up close. We learned about the glowworm's life cycle and how it eats. We learned about limestone, rock formations and the difference between stalactites and stalagmites.
We finished off our tour with a visit to the Waitomo Glowworm Cave, which includes a boat ride in the dark. That is an almost mystical experience. In the silence (the boat moves when the guide pulls it along an ingenious set of ropes and pulleys), we sat, transfixed by the light of the glowworms on the roof of the cave. And came out in a tropical forest. Amazing.

Ziplining in Rotorua
Rotorua ziplining was an ecotourism adventure: the aim of installing a zipline through the park was to have tourists come, bringing in necessary funds to revive the native New Zealand ecosystem.
Before humans arrived, birds ruled in New Zealand. Unfortunately, humans brought with them, wittingly and not so wittingly, possums, rats and stoats. These animals thrived in New Zealand, feasting and decimating the native bird populations with the help of their two legged hunter buddies. Now, in a protected area in Rotorua, zip lining proceeds go toward trapping, killing and removal of possums, rats and stoats.
What's more, the zip lining is fun, scenic and educational.
Oh. Yeah. And the pictures at this zip lining outfit are actually free to download!!!

Hobbiton! Allons-y!
Ah. Oui.
La bague...
Il y en avait une, en fait... Et je l'ai acheté!
