Vendredi.

Behind the scenes at the airport
"So this is what it's like to be escorted out of the airport," Simone thought inanely as the firefighters led her, B and their luggage toward one of the gates. Her writer's mind dreamed up half a dozen scenarios but she released them without regret: she had more important things on her mind. For one, B's head still appeared to be oozing blood and, for another, Simone had to juggle her hand luggage, B's hand luggage and a bag of reading material and goodies she'd bought in preparation for the long flight from Paris to Toronto.
Unfortunately, they weren't going to make it on that flight, because B's wound needed stitches and, at the moment, they were climbing down some steps to reach the ambulance parked at the edge of the terminal. Simone and B each got a seat and they buckled up instants before the vehicle wheeled away. They were ushered into an operating style room. B was given a mask and told to breathe into it - he thought that was a funny request (and indeed it was). Then they stitched B's head up under Simone's supervision.
"You may want to go and reschedule your flight," the doctor suggested. "We'll keep an eye on B while he's recuperating."
Some recuperation: B ate cookies and drank juice.
Thirty minutes later, Simone had secured a return flight for the following day... So much for 15 minutes until the flight boards. Now they had a 24 hour wait time...

Leaving on a jet plane
After a lovely night in the hotel, followed by a leisurely breakfast, Simone and B got ready to head to the airport. They took the shuttle and arrived with plenty of time to get lost three times over - which, of course, Simone did.
At long last, after waiting in interminable line-ups at the check-in counter, customs and security, Simone and B finally got to the lounge.
"Look! A play area!" B cried.
"We can't stay long," Simone warned him. "Our flight boards in thirty minutes."
B hurried over, quickly discarding his shoes, as is the custom in many North American play areas.
Unfortunately, unlike North American play areas, the floor was tiled, not padded with foam. B slipped and fell back against one of the stools that stood incongruously, facing nothing, in the middle of the play area. While the stools were padded, B had the misfortune of hitting the back of his skull against the rim.
The rim was not padded. The rim had a sharp edge. B's skull split open, sending a frightening spray of blood everywhere.
Simone went to the café next to the play area and asked for ice and perhaps a cloth. They quickly provided the requested goods AND called emergency services.
Hmmmm... Do you think there's any chance of still making that flight?

Home Sweet Home
Well, Simone had not reached her current home sweet home but tonight, she and B would sleep in her childhood home in Normandy.
Of course, the room arrangements had changed since her childhood. The room she and her brother had shared was now occupied by Simone's father and stepmom. Simone and B would sleep in the room that Simone's grandparents had slept in. But the 150 year old home remained the same in its overall structure, even as Simone's father and stepmom renovated it, installing much welcome showers and toilets on the second floor and a cold room in the basement.
And B had the grounds to discover: rabbits everywhere, horses in the back pasture, a small orchard in the garden, hidden doors and passageways... A child's fantasy world could flourish here...
Before sleep though, dinner beckoned.
"I was thinking of going to the restaurant for dinner tonight," suggested Simone's dad as they watched B chase another rabbit down.
"Pizza?" Simone said, salivating at the thought.
"Sure," agreed Simone's father.
Pizza at the town's pizzeria bears little resemblance to the fast food, mass-produced variety dear to North America. In fact, a cloud of black smoke undulated from the window as they neared the restaurant. "Is it safe?" They asked through the window.
The chef coughed and nodded. "New sous-chef. He went home."
Hmmmm... Okay then...
