Bye-bye Naan-naan?

The swimming teacher threw a wrench in little B's gears: parents were asked kindly to sit on a bench while their toddlers entered the pool with the instructor. "Sure," agreed Simone. "But you might want to let him keep that purple frog."

The instructor nodded sagely. "There are some battles I do not want to fight," she said.

The entire group did quite well for about two minutes. Then little B noticed that Simone was... not next to him.

"Naan? Naan-naan?" he asked, his voice rising with increasing tension. When he spotted Simone on the bench, he sighed with relief, frowned and pointed to the water, indicating that Simone had fooled around enough. Time to get into the pool. When she demured, little B became increasingly insistent, disrupting his classmates. Before anarchy set in and the rest of the children began demanding that their significant slaves join them in the water, Simone entered the kiddie pool.

The remainder of the lesson proceeded as usual, which is to say that little B participated somewhat and always on the outskirts of the group. Then came jumping into the pool time, followed by, the instructor promised, a turn on the yellow slide. Little B climbed out of the pool and headed toward the line his classmates had formed, in anticipation of jumping into the teacher's arms. Then he swiftly by-passed the line, making a beeline for the slide.

"Uh, no!" said the instructor, grabbing little B's arm and pulling him back into the pool.

Sigh.

That was the end of that. Temper tantrum number ... Simone has lost count of the number of tantrums that have occurred but you get the idea. The tantrum lasted twenty minutes, well past the end of the lesson. Simone wrapped herself in a towel and waited for the emergence of better temper as other parents filed past, avoiding her gaze and the instructor gave the other parents instructions for the following week, instructions she dutifully did not give to Simone. They involved the parents not even putting on their swim suits.

Sigh.

Simone did get a lovely hug and kiss, courtesy of little B, when all was sunny again in little B land. Perhaps, in the end, that is all the thanks we need...

"Trois, quatre, cinq, six, huit, neuf, dix!"

Pinball!

Little B squealed with delight. His "usual" women filled the gym. He had not in fact seen his "usual" women in some months, owing to scheduling changes, but on this particular day, everything was back in order. Simone and little B had managed to catch the last 15 minutes of the pilates class and, after ascertaining that they could indeed come in, Simone proceeded to enter the gym.

"Little B!" The women exclaimed when they saw him.

He tried to peek from behind the exercise bike that barred his way. "Hi!" he shouted. "Peekaboo!"

This made the women giggle which in turn stopped little B from ever trying the peekaboo trick again. No, of course not. Little B played the peekaboo trick for the next five minutes as Mom set up shop next to the reformer (pictured above), a newer form of torture loosely based on the principle of the rack.

For the last ten minutes of the gym class, little B ran from woman to woman saying, "Hi!" He bounced off the walls, quite literally, tossed a soft foam ball around, occasionally catching one of the women, and dramatically tripped and fell on his face twice. Little B simply stood up again and continued running.

One woman sighed, "I wish I could harness some of that energy!"

"I'm tired just looking at him," added another.

"I've heard that the best form of exercise," said the instructor, "is to follow either a toddler or a cat all day and do whatever they do."

Simone shuddered at the thought of doing either. Might as well be the ball in the pinball machine...

Maaa-laaade...

"J'me sens pas bien."

"Tu voudrais un peu de nourriture indienne?"

"Nooooon!"

"Alors tes ongles?

Climbing Frenzy

Simone took little B to an indoor playground because yesterday felt simply too chilly to explore the outdoor variety. Wearing their rain boots, Simone and the youngest clan member dashed through the puddles outside the playground and paid for their entry into toddler wonderland.

Little B, well-versed in the routine, removed his boots - momentarily dazzled by a beautiful pair of bright pink rubber boots lined up ever so nicely under a matching raincoat - and proceeded to the gate as Simone struggled to keep up.

"Come, Naan-naan," ordered the diminutive boss.

Simone took little B into areas he'd never seen before in the climbing frames, judiciously avoiding the slides because they give her headaches. Little B was astounded. "Look, Naan-naan!" He exclaimed over and again.

When Simone proved reluctant to enter a second time into the climbing area, little B, wonder of wonders, went by himself. He bravely explored this brave new world several times before indicating that he'd had enough.

Simone's little man is growing up...
