The Pumpkin Patch

45 minutes. That was how long the temper tantrum lasted. And all because little B wanted to go in through the exit while the staff insisted he go through the entrance.

By the end of 45 minutes of wrestling with him, both Simone and little B were thoroughly exhausted.

But then, after imbibing some sustenance, little B found his happiness again and discovered the joys of the slides and the tricyles. Thanks to the unusually warm weather, he made a new friend: a ladybug. The ladybug was likely not nearly as enchanted with little B as he was with the insect. The ladybug flew off at the first available opportunity.

He had a 5 minute discussion with a certain Mr Chicken at the petting zoo and he fed some zealous goats. He climbed aboard a wooden train and crawled under some tires partially buried in the sand. A staff member objected vociferously when little B crawled under a fence to go play with a "dragon" located outside the play area, demanding that he cease and desist immediately his wanderings outside approved boundaries.

Fortunately, by this time, little B was happy enough to go home. And so was Simone. A 45 minute tantrum takes the wind outta everybody...

Meltdown - whoever thinks parenting is easy probably needs to have a child

The essence of the problem was that Simone missed little B's lunch hour. She had the food ready but it waited in the car for someone to eat it as Simone, hubby and the little guy scoured Ikea in search of ideas to renovate their kitchen.

Already, everyone's nerves were fraught. The kiddie daycare provided courtesy of Ikea was understaffed by inattentive teens and when Simone tried to drop of little B, she was first told that they were full then, when she returned with a very excited little B a bit later, that they wouldn't take little B because he was not toilet trained. Little B responded to this with spitting and angry promises of "I hit you."

When he calmed down somewhat and hubby was busy working out a kitchen plan at the Planning Station, Simone took little B to the children's furniture area at Ikea. He tried all the beds, crawled in and out of various spaces and generally had a blast. Until he spotted the slide. And then a little girl, half his size, wanted to go on the slide as well. She went down. Little B went down and tackled her into a large pillow. Simone pulled the little guy away but his downward spiral had begun. The little girl climbed up the slide itself instead of the ladder and little B tried to follow suit. But since the little girl had reached the top and was preparing to slide down, Simone could only anticipate trouble if she allowed little B to climb up the slide. So...

she pulled little B away from the slide.

The meltdown started. Little B screamed in anger and frustration. People stared: after all, Simone and little B were in the middle of a furniture display. Little B rolled everywhere, pulling at furniture, screaming, hitting his head. So Simone did what she could to restrain him, holding his arms and pinning his legs down. Hubby came around and heard people whispering about the woman who was abusing her baby in the children's section of Ikea.

When little B calmed down somewhat, Simone released him. By this time, two Ikea employees had approached and one tried offering the little guy some water. Simone nearly laughed at this offer. Little B responded with a vociferous "NO!!!" and a subsequent attempt to bash his head against the floor. "Ouch!" yelled little B.

"No!" said one Ikea staffer, clearly horrified.

"You can't leave him unattended," said the other Ikea staffer to Simone.

Simone frowned at the woman who relented and gazed away before leaving.

"What's wrong with him?" asked the Ikea man to Simone's hubby.

"He's having a temper tantrum," Simone's hubby explained patiently.

The incident ended with Daddy carrying the little guy to the car where Simone promptly shovelled food into little B's mouth. To everyone's relief, the temper tantrum abated.

Parenting? It's not for the weak of heart...

"Nou-age!" Et ensemble ils regardèrent les nuages.

"Allez, viens voir ta soeur courir," dit Simone.

Another swimming lesson fiasco...

Little B ran to the check-in desk, as per his custom and shouted a cheerful hello to the ladies behind the counter.

"Little B!" said one of them. "Welcome back. Hurry on in and get changed. Your swimming teacher is waiting for you."

Little B raced to the change rooms, checking that Mom was following him, then proceeded to count the change rooms before settling on one.

"You like number 8 today?" smiled Simone.

"Nummer ate," confirmed little B.

The swimming lesson started out very well. Little B accepted a large plastic circle from his teacher and followed her into to the big pool where they played on a platform in the shallow end.

"Naan-nan?" little B asked a couple of times but, for the most part, managed without dragging Simone into the very chilly water of the large pool.

When the group returned to the warmer shores of the baby pool however, little B decided he'd had enough group activity for one day. He rifled through the toy basket and dutifully ignored his teacher's increasingly strident calls for his attention.

The teacher of the infant group enlisted little B's help to hand out toys and then buckets to each baby. Little B appeared to find this activity quite amusing until his real teacher called for him because it was jumping off the wall time. Little B grudgingly headed over but when the teacher tried to help him out of the pool, he objected rather... violently. He kicked and fought and fought and kicked.

"You have a choice," said the teacher. "Either you go out of the pool this way or you are done with this class. You cannot wander around in the pool unattended."

Little B liked those options so well that he spent the next ten minutes screaming and bashing the pool bench.

Sigh. Gotta look forward to those swimming lessons...

Impromptu Road Trip

Thanksgiving weekend seemed rather quiet. By 1 pm Saturday afternoon, all the chores had been done, heralding the approach of two days of blissful indolence.

"What do you say we go to Ottawa this weekend?" suggested Simone's hubby.

The 18 year old attends university in Ottawa and, due to a sporting engagement, would be unable to return home for the holiday. Simone thought about it for a nanosecond. "Sure! Let's go!" They were unable to leave immediately as the dog needed a place to stay and the kennel was closed but by 9 am the next morning, the car was packed and everyone was raring to go.

"Ow!" complained the 11 year old. "The dog is sitting on me!"

Little B, entertained by his sister's squeals, pulled her hair to hear some more.

"Well, this is going to be fun..." hesitated Simone. "Okay, you," she pointed to the 11 year old. "Headphones on. Your iPod is charged, is it not?"

The 11 year old nodded sorrowfully and placed her earphones over her ears. Silence descended over the car until the dog spotted another canine walking down the street.

"Are we there yet?" joked Simone. In the midst of chaos, nobody heard her.
