Simone couldn't do it. She could barely crawl out of bed to make it to the washroom to puke. The thought of getting up to answer her uncle and aunt's phone, all the way across the apartment, daunted her. So an hour on the subway to visit her cousin and his family was simply too much for her. Even if it was Simone's birthday.
Unfortunately, Simone's cousin took the cancellation badly. She texted him from her cell phone - an international call from her cell would have cost a fortune. Angrily, Simone's cousin tossed the dinner he'd prepared, the cake he'd purchased and even the present he'd gotten for Simone. Then he blocked her from facebook.
When Simone called to apologize and to allow him to rant, he simply told her, icily, that he didn't know what to believe. He wasn't sure whether Simone had deliberately ditched him but regardless, their friendship was at an end. Simone burst into tears but although her cousin claimed to have forgiven her, he still refuses to speak to her.
Simone will always remember her 44th birthday (she remembers so few of her birthdays...) as the one on which she got food poisoning and lost the friendship of someone who is still precious to her.
