Using Flashbacks

Apparently, the use of flashbacks in writing novels, screenplays and any other sort of work sold to the public is... passé. Stories must proceed in an orderly, chronological order to appeal to the public. Confusing storywriting features such as flashbacks, the use of the word "had" and events happening out of sequence must be avoided at all costs.

Interestingly enough, some bestselling authors still use such outdated writing techniques. Someone must have forgotten to mention to them that they need to write in a prescribed, chronological order if they ever want to sell their books. We don't want to confuse the reader, after all.

Here's the thing though, Simone actually likes a story that challenges her at least a little. Simone enjoys romps that take her in and out of time. If all stories really did follow a set pattern in order to become marketable, Simone would have stopped reading out of sheer boredom a long, long time ago.

Here's to hoping that the outdated becomes "new" and welcome once again. Soon.
